Winter weather poses planning challenges, but clear skies predicted for Friday’s festivities
OSWEGO, ILL. – The weather outside has been frightful all week, but that’s not going to stop the 2018 Oswego Christmas Walk, presented by Allied First Bank, from taking over downtown Oswego this Friday.
The 2018 Oswego Christmas Walk, presented by Allied First Bank, will be held from 5 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, throughout downtown Oswego, and promises to be bigger and better than ever with more than 75 activities for families to enjoy.
“Winter’s early arrival has created some interesting challenges for our planning team,” said Community Engagement Coordinator for Special Events Julie Hoffman. “In addition to long shifts clearing snow from the streets, our Public Works crews have been preparing parade floats, hanging our new downtown holiday decorations and working on all of the logistics associated with producing such a large-scale event, but we couldn’t be more excited for the festive atmosphere that a little snow on the ground provides.”
The annual Christmas Walk usually attracts between 5,000 and 6,000 festival-goers to downtown Oswego for a tree-lighting ceremony at Village Hall, a silent illuminated fire truck parade on Main Street, games and prizes, food vendors, horse-drawn wagon rides, reindeer, and visits with Santa himself. This year’s festivities are bigger and better than ever, with a Scout’s North Pole Plaza featuring a s’mores fire and climbing wall, plus Reindeer Games laser tag for high school-aged students near the Little White School House Museum, and new decorations lighting Main Street.
And the weather looks to be mostly cooperating, too. As of Tuesday morning, weather reports for this Friday were calling for temperatures in the low-thirties, with a few clouds but no rain or snow.
“We have warming stations throughout the event and many of our downtown shops will also be open and merry and bright for holiday shopping,” Hoffman said, “So bundle up, grab a program and a hot chocolate, and get ready for an amazing winter wonderland.”
